MPLIC Birding Workshop

The Memphis Public Library & Information Center along with the Memphis Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society will host an everything you need to know about bird’s workshop at the Cordova Library Branch on Tuesday, March 20 at 2:30 pm. Find out everything you ever wanted to know about birds from Martha Waldron from various bird species, to feeders, migration, and how habitats attract certain species. Eco Expo!

The hugely successful Eco Expo is back with even more exhibitors showing us how to treat our earth more gently with green products, materials, services, and organizations.

Exhibitors will be offering ideas and information, and some will be selling their products and services.

The Expo is Sunday February 5th, 2012 from 11am until 3pm at Temple Israel--1376 East Massey Road...Memphis, TN.

For kids and adults of all ages, there’s something for everyone!

Learn, eat, explore, or just visit with some really nice people.

Remember the proverb, “Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents; it was loaned to you by your children.”

Dinosaurs coming to Memphis Zoo

Dinosaurs coming to Memphis Zoo

 

This spring the Memphis Zoo opens an all new exhibit featuring Dinosaurs.

The exhibit will have 15 animatronic creatures.

This attraction will be open March 10 through July 8, 2012.

The Memphis Zoo is partnering with a company that has done this exhibit around the country from San Diego to St. Louis.

The Zoo president says this may sound familiar, but technology is taking the exhibit to a whole new level.

"Many people may remember the dinosaur exhibit the Memphis Zoo had in the 90s," said Dr. Chuck Brady, Memphis Zoo President and CEO.

West Nile Virus is expected to be active in neighborhoods throughout Shelby County for a longer period of time this year.  The Shelby County Health Department urges residents to use repellents when outdoors at night regardless of perceived mosquito activity.

Fred's shoppers donate $30,000 to zoo

Fred's shoppers donate $30,000 to zoo

In just a month of asking for donations, Fred’s Super Dollar handed the Memphis Zoo a $30,000 donation, according to The Daily News.

Shoppers at almost 150 Mid-South Fred’s Super Dollar stores gave a dollar to become “Panda Pals.”

This year’s donation brings the company’s total contribution to $662,000 through the “Panda Pals” program.

The donation will go to animal care, conservation and research at the zoo.

Late-night lounge makes Playboy's list

Memphis bar Mollie Fontaine Lounge, located at 679 Adams Avenue, is featured in Playboy's just-released list of America's best late-night bars.

The After Midnight article in the magazine's August issue is on newsstands now.

The article lists 14 bars in cities across the U.S. where the drinks are strong and the doors are always open, along with descriptions of how each made the cut.

Cell phone store customer bitten by snake

Visiting a cell phone store is not usually a hassle, but that wasn't the case when the Memphis Fire Department got a call to a Sprint store on Poplar in East Memphis recently.

A woman had been bitten by a snake. No one at the store wanted to comment. It's still unclear how the woman was bitten.
