University of Memphis Rugby co-captain optimistic about team's season

Memphis Rugby has not been at the University of Memphis for long, but that has not stopped them from beating team after team every year.

Memphis Rugby does not have many big guys on their team, but the one thing they do have is lots of young players who are extremly fast .

This team out runs their opponents up and down the rugby field.

The rugby team at Memphis holds a record of 12-1 this season.

They recently had their first loss of the season against MTSU.

Memphis Rugby co-captain Scott Smith won the "Rookie Excellence"  award last year. 

"I like (rugby) because it is rough and there is a lot of room for creativity," he said.

Smith said that because the team is so young and doing so well - it puts them at a great standing.

Southaven baseball players sign with area universities

Baseball will likely continue after high school for a handful of Southaven players.

Four student athletes signed with are NCAA Division 1 schools on Wednesday.

Pitcher Nolan Blackwood committed to the University of Memphis.

Catcher Henri Lartigue and pitcher Wyatt Short both signed with Ole Miss.

Vance Tatum, a left-handed pitcher, committed to Mississippi State University.

Since childhood, each of the four young men competed with and against each other.

In addition to the student athletes’ success on the field, their principal said it matches their work in the classroom.

“They are gifted athletes, great kids and students. I have no doubt they are going to be successful on the next playing level and in life,” said Southaven High School Principal Shane Jones.

Jones predicted all of the athletes would graduate with honors.

Fantasy football is typically played online and allows players to virtually manage a team of real life players.  The better a player does in real life, the more points for their fantasy teams.

According to ask.com, nearly 50 million people play fantasy football.  To some, this “sport” has become more popular than the actual game itself. 

So when some of those participants were unable to “manage” their teams this past Sunday, the outcry of frustrated fans was well documented on social media.

One of the largest providers of fantasy football, Yahoo! Sports, experienced technical difficulties with their computer servers. 

Preventing those who participate in their fantasy football leagues from making changes to their rosters before the noon NFL games began. 

Prime time, for many “owners” who chose to wait until the last minute to set their team lineups to account for injuries or last minute news that might affect game play.

Community skate night comes to Ridgeway Baptist

Here’s a fun, economical and healthy activity that the entire family can enjoy! 

Community Skate Night will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, in the Christian Life Center at the Ridgeway Baptist Church on 2500 Ridgeway Road.

Skating begins at 5 p.m. and goes until 7:30 p.m. Admission is $3 per person and concessions will be sold. 

Skates will be provided, no outside skates allowed and if you skate, you must wear socks! 

Roller blades will not be allowed and all skaters must be accompanied by an adult.

Fast and Furriest this weekend

It's a 5K run/walk with "man's best friend" at The Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County (935 Farm Road) on Saturday, October 20th.

"The Fast & The Furriest" starts at 9 a.m. and leashed, friendly dogs are welcomes to complete the course with a  human companion.   Food, drink & door prizes will be offered up as well.

Memphis Magic fall basketball camp Oct. 11-12

Does your child like basketball? Well, this Thursday and Friday is the Memphis Magic Elite Fall Basketball Camp.

It is being put on by Eric Robinson, the founder and coach of the prominent Memphis Magic summer basketball program.

The event runs October 11-12  from 8 a.m to 3 p.m. at Capleville United Methodist Church, located at 4725 Riverdale Rd. on the corner of Riverdale and Shelby Drive. Campers will be instructed on a variety of fundamental basketball drills by Robinson and other local basketball personas.

Children ages 6-14 are welcome to attend the camp, which does cost $80. For more information, you can contact Eric Robinson directly at 901-864-0415.

The Memphis Magic Elite program has featured players such as current Memphis Tigers Joe Jackson, Tarik Black and Adonis Thomas among others. Former Tigers and current NBA players Elliot Williams and Shawne Williams are both alumni of the program as well.
