"Free Food Friday"

"Free Food Friday"

It's "Free Food Friday" at Action News 5. We teamed up with the Midtown Lennys and Curbside Casseroles in east Memphis to raise money for the Mid-South Food Bank.

What will your office do to raise money for the Mid-South Food Bank?

On "Free Food Friday",  we ask our staff to join us for a FREE lunch in exhange for a donation to the Mid-South Food Bank.  It's the second year for the fundraiser at Action News 5.  Staffers were treated to turkey, ham, dressing, green breans, pyramid potatoes, salad, pecan pie, apple pie and much more from Curbside Casseroles Lennys provided turkey, ham, tuna and even chicken salad sandwiches with all the fixin's, chips, cookies and drinks.  The food was delicious!

Dining With Monkeys: Los Jarochos (Taco Trailer)

Dining With Monkeys: Los Jarochos (Taco Trailer)

Last week, I did a story on food trucks for the Commercial Appeal. A lot of research went into the story and we included a list of the 25 trucks that have been certified.

There were several comments on the story (and from my friends on Facebook) about us not listing the Twitter handles for the trucks. Well, I'm sorry to report that the vast majority of them are not using Twitter. @fuelfoodtruck and @bossman901 are the two exceptions. (If you haven't tried the Fuel food truck, you aren't living! I love it. Full post coming soon!)... Read More

I Love Memphis eats hibachi

I Love Memphis reviewed Nagasaki Inn, one of the city’s best kept hibachi secrets, today.

Here’s her description:

Nagasaki Inn is sort of like the Pete & Sam's of Japanese food. Time inside the restaurant seems to have stopped somewhere around 1965, and the space is laden with the nostalgia of past birthday dinners and special occasions.

Dining With Monkeys: Swanky's

Dining With Monkeys: Swanky's

I'm not exactly sure when Swanky's second location opened, but it's been over five years since Steph & Chip reviewed the original location in Germantown.

On Friday night after soccer practice and the Wayne Edge opening at David Lusk, we went to Swanky's for dinner. Swanky's it totally the kind of place we seek when we're out of town, but when in town we usually seek out more authentic Mexican food. I guess because we know where to get it.

Having only been to the Germantown location, and not anytime recently, we were expecting to build our own burritos "Subway style." However, it became very clear that this Swanky's was like a traditional restaurant with table service. That was fine by me... Read More

Eat Local Memphis: The Secret Garden – Fratelli’s Edition

Eat Local Memphis: The Secret Garden – Fratelli’s Edition

Yesterday I met up with two of my friends from ArtsMemphis for lunch at one of Memphis’ hidden gems. Nestled in the Memphis Botanic Garden is Fratelli’s in the Garden. Minutes in either direction from a crowded Poplar Ave. and Park Ave. is a refuge from the urban world around us, one full of flowers, trees, big backyards, and awesome sandwiches! Fratelli’s is providing food at the Shell Out for the Arts event at the Levitt Shell on Friday night, so we wanted to stop by and say hello and get a little lunch.

The three of us sat at a nice patio table in the warm sun, not to be confused with the hot summer sun! In my opinion, fall is the best time to sit outside for a nice meal. While we waited for our drinks, we were treated to a nice olive appetizer.

I love olives, so this was great.

Eat Local Memphis: I Love Local

I love local things, and one of the cool, unique things that Memphis has is Project Green Fork. If you need a refresher course on what they are all about, you should read my old interview with PGF’s founder Margot McNeeley. But for the short, short version, here is their statement:

Project Green Fork contributes to a sustainable Mid-South by helping reduce environmental impacts, with a focus on strengthening homegrown restaurants.... Read More
