(WMC-TV) – It’s always fun to stuff your face with great food, but you’ll get more than a bellyful at a special dinner to help some of the Mid-South’s special athletes.

Eat Local Memphis: For the Fathers

It is here.

The Lumberjack Bar at Muddy’s is a maple bacon blondie. That’s right, just take a minute to compose yourself and wipe away your tears of joy. This is an extremely limited edition being served up today and tomorrow for Father’s Day, so if you want one, now is the time... Read More

Eat Local Memphis: The Geoff

Eat Local Memphis: The Geoff

How do you decide when you’ve made it? Is it when you have a newspaper column? Is it when you get a radio show? What about when you get your own TV show? I imagine those are all pretty good, but I think when you get a sandwich named after you, you are in pretty good shape.

Here’s to Geoff Calkins, because he has made it.

Republic Coffee makes some mean sandwiches, but none are meaner than the Calkins. This smoked salmon, capers, and cream cheese wonder is Sunday column material... Read More

Dining with Monkeys: La Hacienda

Dining with Monkeys: La Hacienda

La Hacienda is in the strip mall with Buster's where El Chico used to be. There's also one in Collierville. My sister claims they have great tortilla soup. A few weeks ago, we decided to try it out. The monkeys (Satchel, 10, and Jiro, 8) ended up having a meltdown, so our whole dining experience ended on a sour note. Last week, I insisted we go back. This time we took met a couple of friends.

I hadn't been to El Chico since I was about 15, so I'm not entirely sure how much or little the interior has changed, but I love the altar in the foyer. Yes, that's cabbage... Read More

Eat Local Memphis: Swine to the Nines

The benefit of blogging about a meal that only happens once a year (and is a custom menu) is that I guess it isn’t a big deal if I forget to actually post the piece for a few months. Things like that are the collateral damage of having your local eat local blog writer also be your local lacrosse coach. I know you all want our fair city to have good lax, so I appreciate that you bear with me during the lulls of the spring.

Besides, we’ve all been hitting the gym to lose a few pounds to get ready for “Suns out, Guns out” weather, right? This post wasn’t going to help that, at all. But, since it is Barbecue Fest weekend, and I’ve got pork on the brain, what better time to get this out?... Read More

Dining With Monkeys: Tokyo Grill

Dining With Monkeys: Tokyo Grill

On Saturday we had two basketball games. When the second one ended it was after 2pm, and we were starved. Since we were in East Memphis, I suggested we try Tokyo Grill. It's one of those places that Warren will ask me about every time we pass, so I figured it was time to end the mystery.

The restaurant is located in a small strip mall. Inside it is cute. There's a very small sushi bar and about 8 tables. Judging from a quick Google search, it appears to be a chain... Read More
