Wharton goes online to explain school funding

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton posted a pair of videos online Thursday night about the ongoing battle between the city and Memphis City Schools.

The first video, according to Wharton, explains "the origins of the dispute" between the two. The second video explains "the ramifications of the Memphis City Council's 2008 decision to pull their funding from Memphis City Schools on our property tax rate."

School funding, city budget on docket for town hall meeting

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton is hosting a virtual town hall meeting Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. on a pair of hot button topics.

Wharton will discuss both the city and budget and how the city plans to fund Memphis City Schools.

Consolidation hot topic in suburbs

The possible consolidation of Memphis and Shelby County governments is causing a group that normally focuses solely on the Lakeland government to reach outside its city limits.

A Political Action Committee called Partnership Lakeland will hold a consolidation forum on Tuesday, Sept 21 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at First Baptist Church in Lakeland.

Historically, the senior vote is the most powerful vote with the largest percentage of voter turnout.   According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nationally, at least 79 percent of those 65 and over cast ballots in the 2004 presidential election, compared to an overall turnout of 52 percent.

Election Commission invites Shelby Co. voters to inspect machines

The Shelby County Election Commission will hold voting machine inspections prior to the Aug. 5 elections.

The touch screen units to be used for Early Voting will be ready for inspection on Thursday, July 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The touch screen units to be used for Election Day will be ready for inspection on Monday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Anyone who wishes to inspect the machines should visit the Election Operations Center, located at 980 Nixon Drive in Memphis during the above times.
