Cohen on flooding, BTW, grit, grind

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) took to the House floor Wednesday morning and talked about the flooding sweeping across Shelby County.

But he also found a few moments to talk about happier subjects. Cohen gave Booker T. Washington High School a shout out for landing the President as the speaker at this year’s commencement address and applauded the Grizzlies for their grit and grind during the NBA Playoffs.

Senator wants U of M student group punished for protest

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - State Sen. Randy McNally is calling on the University of Memphis to "take action" against a student group that was involved in protests at the Capitol this week that led to seven arrests.

The Republican from Oak Ridge said on the Senate floor on Thursday that the protests in a legislative committee room earlier in the week were worse than income tax protests of a decade ago.

Public invited to MCS charter surrender meetings

Memphis City Schools commissioners are hosting a series of public meetings on the district's proposal to surrender its charter.

Commissioners Jeff Warren and Kenneth Whalum will host a public meeting tonight at White Station High School.

Board member Betty Mallott will hold another meeting on Wednesday at Ridgeway HIgh School.

Commissioner Tomeka Hart will hold a meeting at Douglass High School on Thursday. Meanwhile, Commissioner Sara Lewis will also host a meeting on Thursday. her meeting will be held at Mitchell High School.

All meetings will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Civil Rights Museum holding MCS charter surrender forum

In an effort to provide information on the Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools consolidation issue, the National Civil Rights Museum is holding a public information forum on Wednesday, March 2.

Participants include Memphis City Schools Board member Martavious Jones, Shelby County Schools Board Chair David Pickler and University of Memphis Law professor David Kiel.

Beth Sholom Synagogue will host “Exploring the Options: A Panel on Memphis/Shelby County School Unification.”  This event will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m.
