Shelby County D.A. race down to two

The battle over the Shelby County District Attorney seat will be between two women.

Former Memphis Mayoral candidate Carol Chumney is the only person challenging current D.A. Amy Weirich for the position.

March 6th is the primary and the August second is the county general election.

The winner would serve the remaining two years left in Bill Gibbons' term.

New Game Helps Young Civics Students

The Shelby County website has found a way to help young students learn about civics in a fun and interactive means.

A free internet-based game designed for students in grades 6-12 is now available on the Shelby County Government website (www.shelbycountytn.gov) under the “Mayor’s Corner” listing.

“Counties Work” is an online interactive game designed by the National Association of Counties, and features informational sessions and “how-to” segments related to the inter-workings of government.

Phone numbers for county offices change

Shelby County Government agencies, including the Mayor’s Office and Sheriff’s Office, have new telephone numbers.

All county agency offices at the Criminal Justice Center and the Vasco Smith, Jr. Administration Building, 160 North Main, now have new telephone numbers beginning with “222.”

The “222” numbers replaced several telephone exchanges that begin with 545, 377, 379, 544 and others. Most new numbers with prefix “222” also have four new digits assigned to them.

For several months, people who call the old county government numbers will get a recording for the new numbers.

The new “222” telephone numbers are also being used at the Shelby County Health Department offices on Jefferson. The Shelby County Corrections Center and other administrative offices on Mullins Station Road will have new telephone numbers in the next few months.

Cohen urges Big East to invite Memphis into conference

The shakeup hitting collegiate sports conferences has made its way to Washington, D.C.

Rep. Steve Cohen took to the House floor today and urged the Big East to invite the University of Memphis to join the conference.

While the Tigers were left out of early reports indicating which schools would receive invitations into the conference, recent stories indicate that Memphis may be in the running.

State budget hearings come to University of Memphis

Someone once said that if you like laws and sausages, you shouldn’t see either being made. And while you won’t be able to see laws being made next month when Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam comes to town, you will be able to see how the state decides on its budget.

Haslam is taking state budget hearings on a tour of the state “so that citizens in East and West Tennessee have an opportunity to attend,” according to a spokesman in the governor’s office.

County Mayor's Charitable Golf Tournament

Get ready to hit the links with the mayor! Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell invites you to join him Friday, October 14 at Edmund Orgill Golf Course for the Shelby County Mayor’s Charitable Golf Tournament!

This event annually benefits a Shelby County Elementary or Middle School in need of additional support. Northaven Elementary School has been selected as this years beneficiary.

The Orgill Golf Course has hosted the FedEx St. Jude Open, US Open, and National Publinx qualifiers.

Lunch and registration begin at 11am with a shotgun start at noon. For more information call 901-379-7872.
