It's Dr. Seuss' Birthday Celebration at the CMOM

Join the Children's Museum of Memphis, Friday, March 2, from 11am - 3pm to celebrate the birthday of the man behind everyone's favorite childhood books. Wear red and white, participate in a Dr. Seuss storybook character hunt and look for a special guest in a red and white hat to stop by at noon.

Every Child Ready to Read

The Every Child Ready to Read workshop is this Saturday, February 25 at 10:30 at the South Library Branch.

Every Child Ready to Read is a program developed by the Public Library Association in which librarians demonstrate techniques promoting oral language and vocabulary, phonological awareness, letter knowledge, background knowledge and conventions of print. After caregivers are trained, they can teach these skills by talking, singing, reading, writing and playing with children.

Family Tunes & Tales

Musical story time continues this Saturday, February 18 with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet and Kinder Duo. Musicians will bring stories to life through rhythmic tales.  Memphis Symphony Orchestra Kinder Duo will present “Tissues Please,” by Lisa Kopelke. Come and enjoy a mini concert with books, crafts, and light refreshments.

Concerts will be held in two locations—Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library and Cordova Library at 11 am.

MPLIC Valentine’s Day events

There are lots of events planned at your community library today for Valentine’s Day!

  • Frayser Library Branch will host two Valentine’s Day parties. 3 pm for Children and 4 pm for Teens.
  • North Library Brach will host Valentine’s Day craft making for Children at 4 pm.

Many people believe Valentine’s Day is all about chocolates, roses and sappy songs about being in love. But if you are not feeling the love this Valentine’s Day, there is an event for you.

The Raleigh Library Branch will hostLove Bites” at 4 pm. Sing un-love songs in a karaoke sing-off contest and check out what’s new in vampire books from “Books that Bite.” Play lots of games and win prizes.

Paws for Reading

Paws for Reading

The West TN R.E.A.D Therapy Dogs literacy program is designed to help children improve their reading skills. During the event children  read stories to the West TN R.E.A.D Therapy Dogs.

Free FASFA workshops

The Memphis Talent Dividend, along with collaborative members, will host FASFA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) workshops this week to help students and parents complete FAFSA forms.

 Dates and locations of upcoming workshops:

  • Feb. 8 – Frayser Public Library Career Coach Mobile Unit, 1:00 pm-6:00 pm
  • Feb. 9 - Whitehaven Public Library Career Coach Mobile, 2:00 pm-7:00 pm

 Students and their parents should bring:

  • completed 2011 IRS 1040 tax returns
  • W-2 statements and other 2011 income and benefits information
  • current bank statements
  • untaxed income records for the previous year (Social Security, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, welfare, or Veterans benefits records)
  • Driver's license (if any)
  • Alien registration card (if you are not a U.S.

The Art Of Family

Dixon Gallery & Gardens helps families explore the "art" of parenting with "Mini Masters" every Tuesday in February.

The workshop is for parents & kids, and is designed for toddlers to get hands-on exposure to shape, colors, textures and more. 

Story time & snack time are included.  "Mini Masters" is free for members & just $5 each week for non-members.  There are discounts for youth & senor citizens.
