Suspect charged in restaurant employee murder

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A suspect has been charged in the murder of 19-year-old Aaron Vasquez who was killed outside the El Toro Loco restaurant.

According to Memphis police, Vasquez was working at the restaurant last week when he was stabbed to death while taking out the trash. He was transported to The MED where he was pronounced deceased.

Through a thorough investigation, homicide investigators charged 19-year-old Cordricus Arnold with first degree murder in perpetration of aggravated robbery, evading arrest, and resisting official detention.

University of Memphis to observe 'Earth Day'

The University of Memphis will hold its 2013 Earth Day event Thursday, April 18, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.on campus at the Oasis garden. The garden is next to the campus police station, east of the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

"The event is hosted by the University of Memphis TIGUrS (Tiger Initiative for Gardening in Urban Settings), and it will have so many awesome features," said U of M Publications Writer Laura Fenton. "There will be local earth-friendly businesses and parks with booths, give-aways, 'zero-waste,' zumba and tai chi group classes, etc."

Victim's SUV adds new twist to murder investigation

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Police have new developments in the murder of a 19-year-old restaurant employee who was stabbed to death while on the job over the weekend. His SUV that was stolen after the murder reappeared at the scene of the crime Wednesday, according to police.

According to the report, the incident happened around 4 a.m. at the El Toro Loco Bar and Grill on Kirby Road.

Customers showed up at the restaurant Saturday only to find out it was closed for the day.

"It was a shock, because I was looking forward to getting a taco salad," said customer Dolly Nabors.

Nabors was even more shocked to find out why the restaurant was closed.

Memphis police said an employee, 19-year-old Aaron Vazquez, was stabbed to death as he was dumping the trash outside building.

Vazquez then stumbled back inside and collapsed.

"We were closing, we were cleaning the restaurant," said restaurant manager Juan Romo.

Few parents show for first parent, community session

(WMC-TV) - The Illinois-based firm conducting the search for the Unified District only got input from about five or six parents Wednesday night.

Empty seats filled the inside of East High School auditorium which is where the first of two meetings meant to gauge public opinion was held.

Search officials said they were able to get some good one-on-one information from the parents who did show up.

One suburban school board member expects a much bigger crowd Thursday made up of parents who share her opinion concerning the next superintendent.

Thursday night's parent and community input session begins at 7:00 p.m. at Houston High School.

Driver involved in deadly crash will face judge

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A painted stick figure marks the spot on Park Avenue in Orange Mound where a motorcyclist was hit and killed after being struck by a suspected drunk driver. The suspected drunk driver is 33-year-old Sentell Stephens. And Monday, he is set to face a judge.

The crash happened around 7 p.m. Saturday at Park Ave. and Keating St.

Police said the driver of a pick-up truck ran a stop sign. 

He is accused of leaving the scene with his two year-old son in tow. According to the affidavit, Stephens admitted to drinking three 40 ounce bottles of Budweiser.

One family friend said he was surprised by the news.

"My next door neighbor done told me he ran over somebody on a motorcycle and then left the scene, with his kid in the truck," said family friend Bobby Jones.
