Recently Uncovered Fossil on Display at the Pink Palace

Memphis, Tennessee (August 6, 2010) -- An amazing Mid-South discovery goes on display at the Pink Palace Museum Monday, August 9, 2010.  A few weeks ago, remnants of a long-extinct creature were found in the suburbs north of Memphis.  Now, those remnants are on display at the Pink Palace Museum, where curious visitors can get a glimpse of this rare specimen in the process of restoration.
            In June, a contractor digging a pool in Brighton, Tennessee uncovered a very large tooth.  He called the Pink Palace.  Museum staff excavated the find and identified it as the jaw of a member of the family Gomphotherium, extinct relatives of mastodons and elephants.

Memphis School Board member, pastor, and author Dr. Kenneth Whalum discusses and signs his latest book: Hip-Hop Is Not Our Enemy! on Tuesday, August 10, 7 p.m. at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar.

While many have been quick to criticize Hip-Hop music for violent and misogynistic lyrics, his book defends the genre as an expression of African American youth and challenges finger-pointers to provide more positive alternatives.

Overnight temp a record for August 1, among the hottest ever

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Increasingly hot weather has set a record in Memphis.

The National Weather Service says the overnight minimum temperature at midnight Monday at Memphis International Airport was 82 degrees, breaking a record for the date of 80 set in 1980.

It was also the ninth-warmest overnight low ever for Memphis in records that date to 1872 and was the warmest overnight low since Aug. 24, 1982.

Ribbon cutting held for new look at Dobbs Ford at Wolfchase

Staff, board members and ambassadors from the Bartlett Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) gathered at Dobbs Ford at Wolfchase located at 7925 Stage Rd to celebrate a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the business.  Steve Nagel, General Manager, cut the ribbon in celebration of the new dealership façade and the upcoming renovation of the entire facility.

Mr. Nagel, who has been general manager at the dealership since 2005, stated that the renovations of the facility will help to establish Dobbs Ford at Wolfchase as the premier automotive retailer for the residents throughout the Mid-South.  “The staff at this dealership is a part of this community, and that is why we want to provide the best possible sales and service experience for the residents of this community.”
