Head of MCS nutrition services honored | News
(WMC-TV) – He’s already been the subject of a short documentary this year, now the man who makes sure thousands of meals get delivered to Memphis City Schools’ students has made a list of the most influential people in his field.
Tony Geraci, executive director of Child Nutrition Services for the district, was selected for FoodService Director Magazine’s “20 Most Influential.” Geraci was selected alongside First Lady Michelle Obama for the list.
While working for Baltimore City Schools, Geraci turned a 33 acre lot into a garden so students could learn how to grow vegetables, according to the magazine.
“The chef and food consultant from New Orleans joined MCS last year and has since made significant changes in order to serve students healthier food – meals that include fresh, organic produce grown right here in Memphis,” an MCS spokesman said in a written statement.
In addition to starting gardens at Shelby Farms and Grahamwood Elementary School, Geraci has also expanded the district’s breakfast program and an after-school dinner program.
