Thieves gobbling up profit from well-known restaurant | News
(WMC-TV) - A well-known Memphis restaurant has been the target of thieves twice in one week. The Cottage Restaurant on Summer Avenue has been serving breakfast and lunch for decades.
For Dr. Rebecca Doss, the Cottage Restaurant has been home a away from home since the mid-80s.
"Its cheaper for me to come down here than it is to cook it," she said.
On Wednesday her hot plate lunch was even hotter when the air conditioning went out. Thieves had ripped out the copper tubing from the restaurant's rooftop.
Employees say it is getting harder and harder to make ends meet when thieves keeping gobbling up the profits.
"They took all the copper from of the top of the building which was connected to all of the air conditioning units that I have," said owner Lisa Araya. "They tried to rip the whole door off."
Last Friday, crooks cleaned out her outdoor storage pantry. She had to close Wednesday while the air conditioning was repaired. Thursday night thieves returned and pulled more copper from the roof.
"I've had a lot of customers who know it's already a struggle and for this to happen ... It's stressful," said Araya.
Araya says insurance will cover some of the costs after she pays for repairs up front and upgrades her alarm system.
The Cottage is back open, and the regulars remain faithful.
"I just like the atmosphere, everybody's friendly," said Doss.
And air conditioning is back on the menu. Araya hopes police will serve up some justice and catch the thieves who have become unwanted regulars.
Araya says she plans to contact the city mayor's office to ask if he is aware of the crime spree that seems to be unfolding.
While she takes steps to improve security, she hopes police will do the same.
