Accused bank robbers tackled in Target

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Two Mississippi men are in federal custody after they allegedly robbed a bank and were captured inside an East Memphis Target store.

Federal investigators say the two suspects confessed after they were tackled inside the Target.

Francis Ewing and James England are charged with robbing the Suntrust Bank inside the Kroger store at Poplar and Kirby.

Police say it happened around 3:30 Friday afternoon when one of the suspects walked in, demanded money from a teller, then left in a getaway car driven by a second suspect.

An observant witness called police when they spotted the suspects' vehicle at the Target.

Witnesses say up to eight officers tackled the two men in the Starbucks area up front.

Right now, there is no information if the suspects are connected to other recent bank robberies.

Bank robbery suspects tackled inside East Memphis Target

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Two bank robbery suspects were arrested after they were tackled inside an East Memphis Target store Friday.

Witnesses said eight officers subdued the suspects in the Starbucks area inside the Target at Poplar and Ridgeway.

The actual bank that was robbed was the SunTrust Bank inside a Kroger store at Poplar and Kirby.  Police said it happened around 3:30 p.m. Friday when a man walked in, demanded money from a teller, and then left in a getaway car driven by a second suspect.

An observant citizen reportedly called police when they spotted the suspects' vehicle at the Target store.

"I'm amazed," said Target shopper Aaron Duberstein.  "This is a great neighborhood, it's unusual for this to happen here, but I guess bad things happen everywhere."

Things were back to normal at Target relatively quickly.  A patrol car remained on the scene at the Kroger hours after the bank robbery.

Child left alone in car points gun at Memphis police

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) – Police say a two-year-old pointed a gun at them while they were checking on a report that the child and its siblings were left alone in a car while their mother got her nails done.

It was a bizarre twist of events that left other customers wondering why a mother would leave her kids alone in such a dangerous environment.

"It's a crying shame," said Nicole Eubanks, after she heard about the arrest of 23-year-old Erica Rooks. "It doesn't make any sense."

Rooks is charged with marijuana possession, unlawful possession of a weapon and three counts of leaving a child unattended in a vehicle.

Police say Rooks left a four-year-old, a two-year-old and a nine-month-old alone in her car, where she kept a loaded gun, while she was getting a manicure at Beautiful Nails Salon.

The Investigators: Crime scene for sale

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC TV) - Ten days before Memphis police took control of the city's impound lot, the lot's officials sold a mother's vehicle that was state's evidence in her son's murder investigation.

The vehicle, a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am, was owned free and clear by Melody Thomas. Thomas' son, Steven Austin, was driving the car when he was shot dead May 10, 2011, at the intersection of Baltic St. and Faxon Ave in Binghampton.

"His girlfriend called, and she was all...I mean, she was hollering," said Thomas, "and she told me he got shot.

"And I'm thinking hospital visits, you know, he'll be home. But when I got there, it was indescribable."

Records from the Memphis Impound Lot, 465 Klinke Ave., indicated its staff sent Thomas what's called a "C-Letter," postmarked four days after her son's death (May 14, 2011). The letter informed her that her car was on the lot and to claim it within 30 days.

Headstart Program reopens after Vandalism

A Memphis headstart program hit by vandals will reopen soon.

Porter Leath will reopen Monday to provide services for at risk families.

The headstart center was hit by vandals who destroyed the centers A/C units on their roof.

The vandals ripped the copper out of all the of the units.

Porter-Leath Vice President Michael Warr says it's a shame that copper crooks would target an organization that reaches out to the less fortunate.
