New Greek restaurant opens in Cordova

New Greek restaurant opens in Cordova

Pita Wraps is a Greek and Mediterranean restaurant that opened early this January. But, the owner-manager is not new to the restaurant business.

This is the third location that the owner , who prefers to go by just Mo, has opened in the Memphis area. The previous locations are under new management, but customers can now head to the Cordova area to visit with Mo.

He is always friendly and urges new customers to “bite it, before you buy it.”  The food is delicious and healthy and always made fresh for each customer.

Mo recommends that first-time customers try their specialty, the chicken shawarma wrap.  They also have a great vegetarian option, the falafel and hummus wrap.

This location is at 1425 N. Germantown Pkwy, Ste. 4 in Cordova, TN. Like their facebook page here.

Late Officer Martoiya Lang named MPD's 'Top Cop'

Late Officer Martoiya Lang named MPD's 'Top Cop'

Martoiya Lang was one tough cop and the MPD wanted to underscore that truth at its 2013 Commendation Ceremony. The mother of four young daughters was shot and killed in the line of duty on December 14, 2012.

The MPD showered the late officer with one award after another at the tribute on April 16, 2013 at the Hilton Hotel in East Memphis.

During the ceremony, the MPD revealed the results of Lang's hard work in 2012 in the Organized Crime Unit.

She seized $38,000, 433 grams of marijuana, 150 grams of cocaine, 15 grams of heroin, and 150 schedule 2, 3 and 4 narcotic pills. She made 58 felony arrests and seized 20 vehicles.

While on duty serving a search warrant, the MPD officer was killed when an assailant opened fire while concealed in a closet.

On Tuesday, April 16, the MPD named Lang "Organized Crime Unit Officer of the Year" as well as the agency's highest award, "Top Cop."

U of M chemistry chair explains ricin

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Two suspicious letters, one sent to President Barack Obama and one to the U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, postmarked out of Memphis tested positive for ricin – a deadly chemical poison. It may have some of you wondering, what is ricin?

"It's a very toxic natural substance," said University of Memphis Chemistry Dept. Chair Abby Parill-Baker.

Ricin is a poison that is present in castor beans, according the New York State Department of Health. It is part of the waste that is produced during the production of castor oil and as such, is one of the most easily produced plant toxins.

The chemical is extremely deadly, and an amount as small as a pinhead, about 500 micrograms, can be enough to kill, according to OSHA.gov.

"The skills to make it are on pat with the same kinds of skills that people use to make illicit narcotics," said Parill-Baker.
