Dr. Joy Brown Wiener, retired concertmaster of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra,  will shine as the inaugural event's illustrious emcee. Ranging from vocalists to musicians to comedians to tappers, these creative performers range in age from 72 to 94!   This is going to be an afternoon to remember and will make "America Has Talent" look boring!
 
Creative Aging Mid-South works to improve the quality of life for Mid-South elders by providing access to experiences in the arts. In furtherance of its mission, Creative Aging Mid-South hires local professional artists to present quality arts performances and workshops in nursing homes, retirement communities, senior centers and adult day care facilities.

Bethel University Masters of Arts in Education Program hosts essay contest for instructors statewide

Information provided by Bethel University:

Bethel University is seeking essays from instructors on the subject of “The Importance of Continuing Education for Educators.”

Entries, no longer than 500 words in length, must be received no later than August 20, 2010.

The first-place entry will receive a Lenovo Thinkpad X-100 laptop and iPod Touch, valued at $700. Second place will receive a $250 VISA gift card; and third-place will receive a $150 VISA gift card.

Winners will be notified by email no later than Aug. 31.

The Bethel University Educator’s Essay Contest is open to all instructors over the age of 21 who are residents of Tennessee. Entries must be received in electronic format, and can be emailed to: essays@bethelu.edu

Suspects use fake deputy uniforms to target Hispanics

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Two suspects have been using fake Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy uniforms to prey on the Hispanic community, causing many residents to be on guard.

LaMesha Dixon is worried about her next door neighbor who she said was recently attacked by robbers.

"He was out front and somebody robbed him at gunpoint and beat him."

John Lenahan and Matthew Bearden are both charged with three counts of robbery.

According to investigators, the robberies were all in apartment complexes heavily populated by Hispanics.  They happened near the intersections of Macon and Berclair, and Court Avenue and Cleveland.

Investigators said the men dressed in green shirts with a Shelby County Sheriff's logo and badge.  They claim the pair used their fake uniforms to intimidate residents and rob them.

Strong Division hosts "Teens Against the World" School Supply Giveaway

Non-profit organization Strong Division is hosting the 5th annual "Teens Against the World" school supply giveaway on August 7, 2010 at the Douglass Community Center beginning at 12 noon until 3pm.

Strong Division is welcoming donations. The organization seeks to empower and encourage self worth in each child in the community.

Bredesen, Frist to conclude education campaign launch

Gov. Phil Bredesen and former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist are launching the First to the Top Coalition, a statewide alliance of more than 30 businesses, community and education groups uniting to support public education reform in Tennessee.

Their campaign focuses on raising awareness among parents about the effects Tennessee's new and higher academic standards may have on student test scores. The scores are scheduled to be released in September.

The coalition and campaign launch will conclude in Memphis on Thursday, July 22 at 11 a.m.

A jazz exhibit that’s traveled the globe is making a special stop in Memphis this summer. The Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission, Congressman Steve Cohen and the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library in association with Meridian International Center of Washington, D.C. are bringing “Jam Session: America’s Jazz Ambassadors Embrace the World” to the Central Library located at 3030 Poplar Avenue Monday, July 26 to Tuesday, September 14. A preview is scheduled for July 25 from 6:30-8:30 p.m
 
Jam Session is a 100 piece photographical exhibit, which chronicles the international tours of legendary jazz musicians selected by the U.S. State Department to serve as roving cultural ambassadors.
