By Nick Kenney - bio | email

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The U.S. Secret Service is now investigating an identity theft ring apparently centering around a Mid-South restaurant.

"I knew there was money in my account. I've never had a debit card declined before."

Saturday morning, Jeff Roberts' debit card was declined when he tried to make a $10.90 purchase.

"I was embarrassed," he said. "I mean, I am a banker of 24 years."

Within minutes, his bank told him someone had used his card to make an $880 purchase.  Roberts is one of a mounting number of victims who had their card numbers stolen after using them at the Jason's Deli on Park and Ridgeway.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Neighbors are suspicious of a Mid-South woman's claims that a carjacker used a child to trick her.

Monday, Pamela Blakely said the carjacking that happened near her home is suspicious.

"I don't believe it," she said. "I can't believe that story."

A police report says the incident happened Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Highland and Dunn.  There, investigators said, say a woman was driving when she saw a three-year-old child standing in the middle of Dunn.

Investigators say when the woman stopped to help the child, she was carjacked.
