Watching out for you

The Poplar/Highland area possesses one of the strongest Neighborhood Watch Associations in our city.

The group is led by a neighborhood captain who regularly sends out emails with respect to lost pets, garage sales, yardwork services, and crime updates. There have been a dramatic decrease in incidents percentage wise over the last several years and it's likely that decrease is highly influenced by the attentiveness of neighbors and the association (which is free by the way).

The neighborhood is bounded by Highland on the east side, Holmes on the west side, Poplar on the north side and Central on the south.

I have lived there almost five years and I can truly say there is no neighborhood I would rather reside in. I grew up in Memphis, and have lived in Fox Meadows, Germantown, and points in between.

As far as conveinence is concerned, you'll be hard pressed to even make an argument. Can you tell that I'm a bit biased?

University employees pray for living wage

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - University of Memphis employees are literally praying for higher wages.

The employees gathered Saturday at the school's Wesley Foundation for a prayer vigil seeking pay hikes for university employees.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports that about 285 University of Memphis employees make less than $11.62 per hour - the amount David H. Ciscel, a professor emeritus of economics at the school, determined was a living wage.

At the vigil, organized by university employees along with the United Campus Workers, Workers Interfaith Network and the Progressive Student Alliance, workers spoke on the challenges of earning less than a living wage.
